Preparing for Kindergarten: Overcoming First-Day Fears

“School phobia” or “separation anxiety” is a common condition in children starting kindergarten or preschool. Leaving the safety of their homes and parents creates significant stress for children. Art and coloring provide a wonderful bridge for children to express and overcome this fear without needing words.

Story-Based Coloring Pages

Instead of just giving your child plain paper, offer coloring pages with themes like “animals going to school,” “the school bus,” or “children playing with friends.”

While coloring, you can start dialogues like these:

  • “Look, this little bunny has its backpack on and is going to its teacher. Do you think the bunny is excited?”
  • “Let’s color the school bus your favorite color. What color would you like the walls of your kindergarten classroom to be?”

Making Emotions Tangible

It’s difficult for children to make sense of abstract concepts like “fear.” Ask them to draw their fears on paper. Ask, “If fear were a monster, what would it look like?” and color the strangely shaped monster they draw together. Then, play a game of “Look, we defeated the monster!” by crumpling up the paper and throwing it away. This tangible action sends a message to the child’s mind that fear is something that can be overcome.

The “Draw a Picture for Us” Ritual

To your crying child on the first day drop-off, you can say: “I have to go now, but I’ll be back in the afternoon. Until then, can you color a big heart for me at school and keep it safe? You can give it to me as a gift when I come back.” This gives them a “safe task” to focus on during their time at school.
